The Chanute Veterans of Foreign Wars post has voted to move to smaller quarters and met Friday evening to plan the change.
The Cecil J. Meeker VFW Post 1654 Commander Jason Bash said the post voted Tuesday to close its current building and find a smaller location. The current building at 1654 W. Main Street was constructed in 1968, but Bash said they can’t maintain it because of low membership.
The post has 168 members, and about 400 including the ladies’ auxiliary.
Bash said he was not sure when the post was chartered, but the group is not disbanding and will keep the charter.
The current building will be put up for sale, which Bash said has to go through the state VFW. Offers will be sent to the state level for approval.
Bash said events such as wedding receptions scheduled later this month and in September will be held as planned at the building.
