The Kansas Department of Commerce Secretary visited Chanute Thursday to tour three local businesses.

Secretary David Toland visited at the invitation of the Chanute Area Chamber of Commerce & Office of Tourism. He toured Chanute Manufacturing, Bridgewood Custom Cabinetry, and Consignment. Toland arrived after speaking in Ottawa Thursday morning.

The tour of Chanute Manufacturing was led by Vice President of Operations Dustin Stanley along with Susie Ellis of KansasWorks, Aime Cope of Southeast KansasWorks, and Ruthann Boatwright of Main Street Chanute.

Bridgewood Cabinetry General Manager Jeff Caldwell then led the tour of that facility along with members of the chamber board of directors. The visit to Consignment provided a look at the renovated Kress department store building downtown by owner Cora Finley.

She described her efforts to maintain the historical integrity of the building. During roof work, contractors removed 17 layers, all the way down to the original.

“Everyone wants to own these buildings until they actually own one” and find out how much work is involved, she said.
