THAYER — A Thayer home was destroyed early Sunday morning by what investigators suspect was a lightning strike.

Firefighters responded to the Kenneth Coatney residence in Thayer at 1:36 am Sunday and it was fully engulfed when they arrived.

Kenneth and Shari Coatney, their daughter Kristin and two foster sons, Tyson and Dominic, said they were awakened by thunder and escaped without major injuries.

Thayer, Chanute and Galesburg fire departments responded, along with the Neosho County Sheriff’s Office and Neosho Memorial Regional Medical Center.

Officials were on the scene for more than five hours and the cause is still under investigation.

Shari Coatney is CEO/President of Southeast Kansas Independent Living (SKIL) Resource Center in Parsons. Kenny also works at SKIL, building home modifications for customers.

The family is staying with Shari’s parents but will need clothes, medications, furniture and other items.
