WICHITA — On Saturday evening last week, 15-year-old Drew Bockover and his friends were riding golf carts around a Wichita neighborhood.
KAKE-TV reported that at some point, Drew flew off the back of a cart, landing on his head.
The son of Chanute natives Scott and Rene (Brady) Bockover, Drew is a freshman at Bishop Carroll, where he plays football, basketball and baseball. Doctors at Wesley Medical Center tell the Bockovers a brain injury as severe as Drew’s may prevent him from fully recovering.
“Our whole life has been revolved around sports, so knowing that he might not get that opportunity ever again. That’s heartbreaking for him,” his sister Brooklyn Bockover told the TV station.
Drew’s family is overwhelmed with the community’s support. Many people across Wichita have sent gift cards for groceries and even brought meals to the hospital.
“They know us. We might not know them, but it’s still just so heartwarming and humbling to be honest, that these people would go out of their way to pray and do all that for us,” says Brooklyn.
The Bockovers also thanked the community, especially their Catholic church family, for continued encouragement.
“I think that thoughts and prayers is the number one thing,” Brooklyn said. “I mean time heals, so we just need time to figure out what’s next.”
Bishop Carroll is holding an all-school mass this morning, giving the family an opportunity to thank the community. Donations to the family may be made through the family’s Facebook profile or through Drew’s gofundme account.
The next step for Drew is Madonna Rehab Hospital in Nebraska.
