Knox speaks on southeast Asia mission trip
John Knox has taken his faith across the world and back. He spoke at Monday Night’s Kiwanis Club meeting about his experiences on a mission trip in China and southeast Asia.
Knox is the son of State Representative Forrest Knox, Altoona, who is now running for State Senator.
Knox said he had felt for some time before his trip that God was calling him to go on missions in China.

Erie’s water conservation plan working
ERIE — The City of Erie has reported water conservation is working.
Stage 2 (Water Warning) of the water conservation plan is still in effect. The goal of Stage 2 is to reduce peak demands by 20 percent and reduce overall weekly consumption by 10 percent. Consumption from 8-2-12 through 8-8-12 was 1,500,000 gallons; 8-9-12 through 8-15-12 was 963,000 gallons; 8-16-12 through 8-22-12 806,000.

22-year-old injured in cycle accident
Casey Jasper, 22, of Chanute, was injured in a motorcycle accident on the North overpass Monday night.
Chanute Police, Fire Department and EMS were dispatched at approximately 9:43 p.m.
The motorcycle was the only vehicle involved. The accident is still under investigation at this time.

Blue Comet pep rally on Wednesday
Blue Comet pride will take over Main Street on Wednesday evening.
A pep rally is scheduled beginning at 5:30 p.m. in the area of Cardinal Drug downtown.
Activities will include face-painting by the Chanute High School cheerleaders at Merle Norman, the fire truck and ambulance for the kids to see, and a cake walk and bake sale in the Google Earth emblem area.

Lightning strike darkens most of Chanute Saturday night
Lightning was responsible for Saturday night’s power outage that left most of Chanute residents without electricity.
Utilities Director Larry Gates said distribution lines on Plummer Avenue took a direct hit. The lightning strike knocked power out for approximately one hour.
“The circuits opened at 8:38 p.m. and took out three breakers,” Gates said. “The majority of users south of Cherry Street were affected.”

THAYER – The 101st annual Thayer Homecoming will begin Thursday, Aug. 30, with crowning of the Watermelon Queen at 6:30 p.m.

County approves 2013 budget
ERIE – At Friday’s meeting of the Neosho County Board of Commissioners, no public comment was received before publishing the 2013 budget of $12,431,236 with an estimated mill levy of 53.641, .766 more than the 2012 levy. The vote was 2-0 in favor, with Commissioner Mike Schoenhofer absent.

Friday is the annual Chanute High School Can Opener/Football Scrimmage. The community is encouraged to bring an item to donate to the local food pantry as admission.
