Luncheon, Back to School Bash Sunday at FireEscape
FireEscape Coffeehouse, 126 W. Main, ¬†will host two events this Sunday, August 19. A fundraiser luncheon of pulled pork sandwiches, baked beans, cole slaw and dessert will be available from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m.

Excitement rules first day at schools
The students weren’t the only ones excited for the first day of school on Thursday.
The principals of Chanute Elementary, Royster Middle School and Chanute High School expressed excitement for the new year.
“Kids seemed excited to be here,” said Chanute Elementary Principal Gary Wheeler. “And parents were excited for their kids to be here.”

City prepares to welcome triathletes to The Jungle

A Chanute student is one of the winners of Governor Brownback’s new Kansas Summer Reading program.
Alice Griffith, 6, who starts first grade at Chanute Elementary today, read 425 books over the summer.
Alice is the daughter of Erik and Takako Griffith.

Shockley opens Track Side salon
Another new salon opens in Chanute today.
Kayla Shockley, previously an employee of Hull’s Place, opens the Track Side Salon today at 22 W. Main.
“I had been looking at that building for about two months but I just closed on July 3,” she said. It’s all happened pretty fast.”
Shockley has worked at Hull’s Place since March of 2011. She graduated from Fort Scott Community College’s cosmetology program in Pittsburg.
