Murray Hill Senior Apartments now open
The old Murray Hill Elementary school building officially reopened as Murray Hill Senior Apartments Friday.
Work finished just shortly before the grand opening and open house that ran from 1 to 3 p.m. Friday.
The building was remodeled and the new senior apartments will be managed by Foutch Brothers property management.

Budget mill levy unchanged for NCCC
At a special meeting Thursday, the Neosho County Board of Trustees moved to approve the publishing of mill levy taxation request to Neosho County.

Police report Social security number scam
The Chanute Police Department recently received a report of another suspected scam.
An elderly member of the community reported that a caller claimed to be from social security and asked for the person’s social security number. The caller further indicated that they wanted to issue a new card.

County commission extends burn ban

ERIE — Due to continued drought conditions, the county-wide burn ban has been extended for another week by the Neosho County commissioners.

Peck gets sendoff before honor flight to DC

The American Legion Post 170 gave a high-powered sendoff to Humboldt painter and U.S. Navy Veteran Harvey Peck Thursday.
Peck, 86, will be going on an Honor Flight to Washington DC on Tuesday.

Wilson demonstrates fingerprinting at library
Children at the Chanute Public Library got to learn some Crime Scene Investigation Wednesday.
Will Wilson, of Elsmore, brother of Chanute children’s librarian Kandi Wilson, demonstrated fingerprinting to 20 children at the library.
Wilson served in the Air Force for 22 years.

NCCC releases new logo

Neosho County Community College has released a redesign of its mascot logo, the panther.
The current mascot, known as “shadow panther,” for the heavy shadow that falls over the approaching panther, is currently being phased out with clearances of branded merchandise at the NCCC bookstore.

Music in the Park finishes up its summer August 11
Music in the Park, a program put on by the Parks Advisory Board, started four years ago in Chanute. This summer, local groups performed for free in Santa Fe Park every second Saturday.

Kathleen Rhodes learned how to make puppets from reading books from the Chanute Public Library.
Tuesday, she performed a marionette play with her mother, Amy, and younger brother Paul to a packed  room full of children at the library.
Rhodes, 21, who lives in the Buffalo area, became interested in puppets about two years ago.

Coffeyville woman rolls car after blowout
Melinda Ann Carr, 54, of Coffeyville, was northbound on U.S. 169 Highway at 8 p.m. July 19, about a mile east of Humboldt, when her tire blew out, causing her vehicle to enter the east ditch, the Kansas Highway Patrol reported. The vehicle rolled twice and came to rest on the driver’s side facing west.
Carr sustained possible injuries, but the KHP did not report that she was taken to a hospital. Carr was wearing a safety restraint.

Of course, fishing and boating options are plentiful at the park, which stretches nearly 250 acres.

Asphalt overlay approved to dress up downtown

An asphalt overlay will now put the finishing touches on the Main and Lincoln street renovation project in downtown Chanute.
A bid proposal for the asphalt overlay project was unanimously approved on Monday night at the regular meeting of the Chanute City Commission.
