The Chanute Channel TV-5 celebrated two years on the air on Friday. Owner and operator Chris C. Conklin said he recalls “nay-sayers” saying the TV studio wouldn’t last six months in a small town.

County approves burn ban

ERIE -- Neosho County commissioners met in regular session Friday and adopted a resolution proclaiming a burn ban throughout Neosho County, effective immediately. Nine minor fire calls on the Fourth; Allen County passes burn ban order
The Chanute Fire Department responded to nine fireworks-related calls July 4 and one the morning of July 5.
No injuries were reported, though calls continued through the official Chanute fireworks display at Santa Fe Lake.
The official display went off without any problems, fire department officials said.
In Allen County, commissioners passed a burn ban for unincorporated areas that will go in effect today.

The Chanute Area Veterans Memorial will break ground on Independence Day.
The groundbreaking ceremony will be 7 p.m. July 4 at Santa Fe Park, just east of the ball fields.
