Altoona-Midway USD 387 board members approved the purchase of an analog system for narrow band replacement radios at the board’s May 14 meeting.

Chanute Public Library Summer reading program begins
The Chanute Public Library’s Summer reading program started May 29.
The program is divided up into grade-based categories.
All individuals can sign up for summer reading at any time during the Summer.
Prizes are awarded for passing certain milestones for number of books read.
All books must be checked out from the Chanute Public Library.
For first grade through going into senior year of high school, the program ends July 28.

Sky Smeed, a Chanute native and musician, will be performing in Chanute June 5.
He is on day 22 of a 50 show, 50 day tour.

Chanute native Matt Jackson traded the rolling hills of southeast Kansas for the rugged mountains of eastern Afghanistan as a specialist in the Army Reserve.
Jackson was graduated from Chanute High School in 2006 then took classes at Neosho County Community College prior to enlisting in the Army Reserve in 2010. He returned to his hometown in March, having served in a unit that maintained Chinook helicopters.

County, state unemployment rates drop
The seasonally adjusted unemployment rate for Kansas dropped slightly last month while the jobless rate in Neosho County fell by 1.2 percent.
According to a Kansas Department of Labor report, the unemployment rate throughout the state was 5.8 percent in April, a decline from 6.6 percent in March and from 6.3 percent in April 2011.
