Camper couple offer thanks to caring Chanute To the citizens of Chanute: Thank you. We are forced to thank you as groups because in the aftermath of the storm of the morning of May 8 we didn’t get the names of the many people who treated us as family. Please know that we will never forget any of you, but will probably never really know your names. Such as, the policeman who made sure we were OK and offered a report, if needed, the park and...

Treatment is available for AMD
Have you ever noticed that the problems of others are not fully realized until the same thing affects you or a member of your family? If it is a health problem, you find that you are not alone. Many people have the same problem, disease, condition, etc. that you or your family is dealing with. The old saying, “You don’t know what another person goes through until you walk in their shoes,” is so very true! That was the case with our family wh...

Don’t believe Chicken Little
“The Sky Is Falling” “The Sky Is Falling” So says Chicken Little in the children’s story. “Christian America is Falling” “Christian America is Falling” So says Newsweek magazine on a recent cover. Newsweek’s article is based on a summary of the 2009 American Religious Identification Survey. The frightening statistic? Since 1990 Americans who claim no religious affiliation have gone from 8 to 15 percent. Doomsayers proclaim America is ...

RMS’ Vocal Plus performance a treat Congratulations to Lance Burnett and Co. I had the pleasure of attending the performance of Seussical Jr. by Royster Middle School Vocal Plus students at the Memorial Auditorium on May 1-2, and it was free. Vision becomes reality — a home
Vision Chanute Three years ago approximately twenty Chanute citizens, representing the four sides of the public square (Business, Education, Health & Human Services, and Government), participated in a conversation sharing visions they had for our town. One of those visions has become a reality. The conversation in 2006 generated five goals for a citizen group later to be known as Vision Chanute. Vision Chanute is proud to announce that ...

TVDS active in communities it serves
Giving something back Tim Cunningham TVDS Director “We are prone to judge success by the index of our salaries or the size of our automobiles, rather than by the quality of our service relationship to humanity.” ¬≠— Dr. Martin Luther King With an agency of over 150 employees that serves approximately 200 people with developmental disabilities, you would think that we would not have time to give back to the communities where we live, work...

Imagine …
Rick Qualls First Baptist Church Imagine you arrived in Chanute, without family or friends, having no job. Your transportation is your feet. You have all your earthly possessions in one large suitcase. How would you start? What would you do first? Where would you start? How would you ask for help? Could you ask for help? This is not an unimaginable scenario. Pastors are often called into these situations. Where would you begin to help? I tho...

Integrity real index in Woodson County Kansas has been symbolized throughout American history by iconographic symbols of struggle with nature and circumstance. Drought, depression, tornadoes have challenged the pursuit of prosperity on the plains and wrought a people purposed to persevere despite the odds. Perhaps the real prosperity index of this state is not success but the development of those intrinsic character traits of integrity, ho...

More info, Chief Budreau Quite obviously, Chanute Chief of Police does not want to discuss what the police response to protest demonstrations is. Twice in the past two weeks, he had the opportunity to give details and choose not to provide any light on Chanute Police operations. His response was “procedures in place since 1994 to provide for response to special events.” This response gives me no comfort or confidence in Chanute Police depar...

More information sought to TEA Party questions I am not only disappointed, but also upset, with Mr. Budreau’s answer to the questions in last Saturday’s paper. The questions were specific and to the point. As a Chanute citizen I felt his response was that a Chanute citizen had no business asking the questions and that he was not worth the time and effort it takes to respond. In other word it was none of our business!! Would his (and our) po...

Health care for kids a bright spot in a bleak budget
While Kansas lawmakers work to address a bleak state budget, Dwayne Umbarger has made sure there’s a bright spot for Kansas children and families. Last year, lawmakers made a promise to provide Kansas kids with the health care they need at a price their parents can afford. With leadership from Sen. Umbarger, lawmakers have delivered on that promise. Now, in the final days of the Legislative Session, it’s important that we keep the commitment....

Wasted votes There has been talk of wasted votes for those that did not win or those that were not thought able to win the election. A vote is not wasted for someone that shares your beliefs in what you think are the issues and solutions. A vote is not wasted even if the candidate did not win. Votes are wasted if not cast. Votes are wasted if cast for one that you don’t beliefs or plans. Votes are wasted if cast for name only and not issues...

Talking handshakes
Rick Qualls First Baptist Church President Obama’s handshake with Hugo Chavez at a recent summit created a lot of press, both positive and negative. What do handshakes say? Recently I finished a book on body language with a section on what handshakes can mean. A palm to palm handshake indicates both parties are putting themselves on equal footing. Some handshakes are “one palm over palm.” This is a power handshake. The top palm indica...
