County jail not a mental health hospital While federal and state law prohibits me from discussing the details of Mr. Isom’s case or mental health status, I can say without any doubt that the Neosho County Sheriff’s department has not only done what is required of them but has gone above and beyond. I can appreciate Mrs. Isom’s concern for her son, but as with any criminal, no amount of help will be successful until the criminal decides he...

Editor’s note: This letter should have appeared in the Wednesday edition. Family concerned about county jail actions First, we want to say we are not supporting either candidate for sheriff. We are sharing a highly personal experience in order to inform taxpayers of their exposure to liability by a Sheriff’s Department that has no oversight. Who wouldn’t like to have a job with a salary of $45,897.28 a year, no performance review, no super...

Take the entire family to the polls “I want to vote on November 4th!” This is what many of you will hear from Chanute students ranging from kindergarten to high school.¬† Kids Voting Kansas is an exciting program that teaches not only the importance of voting, but the importance of casting an educated vote. The voting process can be cumbersome and intimidating to some. Kids Voting Kansas starts with teaching kindergarten students what a ...

What the heck? Vote Slattery I purchased a new washer and found that the water didn’t get hot. I was told that the EPA insisted every washer have an extra cold water valve to kick in so the water wouldn’t get too hot. So, I wrote to Senator Roberts asking why the EPA was concerned with the temperature with which I washed my towels instead of concentrating on the mercury pollution that causes neurological damage to kids. He reply thanked me...

Vote McCain Barack Obama is not fit to be President of the United States of America, the Commander in Chief. As a senator he voted against funding for support of our military personal in Iraq. He wanted to pull our troops out of Iraq as soon as possible, regardless of the consequences to the regional balance of power, or the moral psyche of the troops and the American People. Senator Obama was wrong in asserting that the surge strategy wo...

Defending Nich Galemore After attending the Candidate Forum on Oct. 23 I feel that I need to respond to Mr. Orr’s comments in his closing statement. Nich Galemore, nor Citizens for a Cleaner Chanute, ever took any pictures concerning blight in Chanute. Those pictures were taken by me and my sister in-law at the direction of then-City Manager Randy Riggs. Mr. Riggs suggested that we collect photos and gather signatures on a blight petition und...

Vote for Sheriff Keath’s re-election urged I would like to write in support of Sheriff Jim Keith. I have had the honor of working with Sheriff Keith and can tell you that his is not an easy job. In today’s ever changing world you have to keep up changing laws. Jim, along with his staff, continue to attend classes to keep up with these changes. I also believe that we have seen a reduction in crime in our county under his tenure as sheriff. I...

Edge of town voting Yes-Yes I encourage all Chanute residents to vote Yes-Yes on Proposition 1 and Proposition 2. I only wish I could join you in the voting. As I live outside the city limits, I’ll not be able to vote on these two community building propositions. So why should you listen to me encouraging you to support them? Every time I shop in Chanute I’ll be paying the sales tax described in these two propositions. All of my monthly s...

Get educated, vote Obama Mr. Horgan, if you are prepared to vote against Barack Obama on Nov. 4 based on completely wrong accusations, that is fine with me. But let me clear everything up for those who actually care what will really happen. First of all, Barack Obama does not support same sex marriage. It actually says on his website that he opposes gay marriage and supports strong civil unions. But of course, who wants to look at a candida...

Wake Up America! Americans may be about to make a serious and possibly fatal mistake if they vote Senator Barack Obama into office of President of the United States. The very future of America is a stake. We need to look at this election on Nov 4th with discernment. Aristotle said: “Those who don’t know history are doomed to repeat it.” Folks, history is filled with the remnants of nations who forgot history. The Roman Empire fell through m...

Fleet tags are required by law Regarding the Tribune article about the county commissioner candidates public forum where Dave Orr was put down by his opponent for having fleet tags on his company trailers, I wanted to clear up how the system works. To educate Mr. Galemore and others, it is customary to have what we in the industry call power plates, also known as ICC plates, on all vehicles that are used for travel and delivery across sta...

Supporting David Orr I am writing today in support of David Orr for 2nd District Neosho County Commissioner. I have known David since the 1960’s and have always found him to be a dependable and trustworthy person that the people of Neosho County can count on. David is a born leader who will address the strengths and weaknesses of the County and come up with solutions for them. I have worked with David in the Chanute Lion’s Club and seen hi...

In Support of David Orr I don’t usually respond to election rhetoric but recent radio ads have disturbed me to the point of comment. I have never met, nor do I know, Mr. Galemore but I do know that the information presented on his radio ads is misleading and presented in such a manner as to deny David Orr due respect and credit for what he has done for this community. I have known David for many years and he is an outstanding citizen with ...

Helping Kansans recover from identity theft
Steve Six Attorney General Identity theft continues to be a serious problem for Kansans — as well as many people across the country. In an effort to help people victimized by identity theft, I created the Kansas Identity Theft Repair Kit. It is an educational brochure aimed at preventing identity theft and repairing the damage it causes. Identity theft can be crippling to its victims, both financially and emotionally. The road to recover...

In agreement with Yes, Yes I am in total agreement with Nina Tallent’s article. Here is the short version of Proposition 1 and 2. Chanute needs a swimming pool. Proposition 1 will pay for the construction of the pool at the former Chanute High School grounds. But, money to maintain the pool is also needed. Proposition 2 will not only provide money to maintain the pool but provide funds to open a Chanute Recreation Center in the former hig...

Treasuring time
Tom Davolt Parkview Holiness Church. Time is a precious gift that is given to us all. How we spend it is up to us. In Tami Cochran’s song “Angels in Waiting” the phrase “treasuring time till time came to leave, leaving behind sweet memories,” reminds us all that time will run out someday. I remember too well watching my own son as his time ran out. He suffered from an incurable heart disease. I remember treasuring time from a new perspect...

Guilty by association and proud of it! Recently I had the privilege of meeting with the teachers of my three children who attend school at USD 413. In meeting with the teachers, I found them all to be extremely supportive with a “kids first” type enthusiasm for each individual student. In attending the various conference locations, one is obviously impressed with our facilities. Yet, at the end of the day, the most impressive element of ...
