Ad frenzy stretches far beyond game
NEW YORK (AP) — The Super Bowl commercial blitz is extending beyond the usual talking babies and office chimps to engage viewers online and get more for advertisers’ $3 million-plus investment. Marketers are using every trick in the playbook to dominate the buzz before the game and long afterward, too. The gimmicks include online contests, a car “race” powered by Twitter mentions, and a secret new level of a hit iPhone game. The goal is to...

‘Robot’ Tomlin says Steelers ready to go
DALLAS (AP) — Mike Tomlin stood stone-faced behind the Lombardi Trophy as a few dozen cameras fired away. “Smile, Mike!” one photographer yelled out. “Nah,” the Pittsburgh Steelers coach said without a hint of a grin on another cold, snowy Friday in Big D. He eventually cracked a smile, but this is serious stuff for Tomlin as the Steelers go for the seventh Super Bowl title in franchise history Sunday against the Green Bay Packers. “We’r...

Packers’ Driver gets first taste of Super Bowl
IRVING, Texas (AP) — Donald Driver’s 36th birthday celebration the other day was a relatively reserved affair, just some cake with his wife and kids. When the Packers face the Pittsburgh Steelers at Cowboys Stadium, it will be Driver’s first Super Bowl — the...

Kansas goes for speed in 2011 class
LAWRENCE (AP) — Speed and competition were the themes of coach Turner Gill’s first full recruiting class at Kansas, a group of 26 high school seniors and one junior college transfer. A lack of speed was obvious in the Jayhawks’ 3-9 campaign last year. Gill has emphasized speed as his top recruiting priority since he replaced Mark Mangino as coach last December. The class that Kansas announced Wednesday is ranked No. 34 in the country by Ri...

Wildcats handle Nebraska 69-53
MANHATTAN (AP) — With Bramlage Coliseum silent for Jacob Pullen’s free throws, a Nebraska fan took the opportunity to scream, “Shave your beard!” There may have been times in a frustrating season when Pullen and the Wildcats would have been willing to do anything — maybe even remove trademark facial hair — to change their fortunes. But that was not the case on Wednesday night, as Kansas State cruised past Nebraska 69-53. “I feel bad we hav...

Titletown USA: Green Bay or Pittsburgh?
Barry Wilner AP Pro Football Writer Titletown USA. Green Bay claimed the nickname years ago. Pittsburgh, which already has a renowned nickname, Steel City, thinks Titletown is more appropriate for the Pennsylvania burg with three rivers. Next Sunday’s Super Bowl features the NFL’s dynasty of the 1960s, the Packers, against the franchise that dominated the ‘70s, the Steelers. Never has a Super Bowl been so loaded with history. But since t...
