Funk makes hole-in-one
Abbegale Funk scored a hole-in-one during the SEK Junior Golf Tournament on June 23 at the Independence Country Club.
The shot occurred on the 96 yard par three 17th hole using a pitching wedge.
The shot helped secure first place for Funk in the 12-13-year-old girls division with her final score of 47 over nine holes.

Chanute junior golfers fare well at Indy

The Quarry Stone Junior Golf Team from Chanute fared well last Thursday at the SEK tournament hosted by Independence Country Club. The highlight of the day was Abbe Funk’s hole-in-one on the par 3 17th hole. Funk also placed first in her division with a score of 47.
Several other Quarry Stone golfers medaled.

Short-handed Chanute Sharks fall to Coffeyville
COFFEYVILLE —The Chanute Sharks Swim Team, or at least part of them, traveled to Coffeyville on Wednesday for the third meet of the year.
The Sharks were short-handed for the meet.
Summer schedules and a couple of illnesses cut the Sharks team nearly in half.
In spite of this, Chanute still won six of the 12 relay events and 29 of the 56 individual events where they entered at least one swimmer.

SEK Sluggers win state youth softball tourney
CHANUTE — The SEK Sluggers made the area proud by winning the Kansas USSSA 14U State Championship.
The Sluggers played last weekend in Topeka.
The softball tournament began Friday night and continued through Sunday afternoon.
The SEK Sluggers features girls from Chanute, Humboldt, Iola and Nevada (Mo.).
Coach Tom Turner said the young ladies won by playing as a team, with good defense, only allowing a handful of runs all weekend.

CHANUTE — Chanute Post 170 trailed Spring Hill 4-0 going into the bottom of the seventh inning in game one of Tuesday night’s doubleheader.

IOLA — The Chanute Post 170 American Legion baseball team went two-for-two on Saturday at the Iola Post 15 Tournament at Allen County Community College.
Chanute defeated Paola 14-11 and then topped Linn County 8-2.
Sunday’s games were rained out.

Tribune staff Neosho County Community College has not one, but two all-american baseball players. Adam Giacalone and Caleb Compton were both listed on the NJCAA’s All-American Baseball Team. CHS TRACK: Season ends at state

WICHITA — The Chanute High School track team finished the 2011 season on Saturday at the Class 4A State Track Meet at Cessna Stadium on the campus of Wichita State University.
No member of the team was able to reach the medal stand.
The CHS girls 4x400 relay team of Ashlyn Cole, Morgan Olson, Tara Haight and Mariah Brooks just missed a medal. The Blue Comets finished eighth with a time of 4:18.
