CHS’ Lia Gutierrez putts on hole 8

Chanute golf played host to an invitational golf tournament Friday that, because of the reschedule, was the final SEK League tournament.

“There was some initial concern about whether we would be able to get the tournament in, especially since we had to cancel the JV tournament we were supposed to host the day before,” said coach Trevor Ewert.

“Conditions were wet, very wet, but the weather was perfect; cool in the morning but sunny with a slight breeze,” he said.

Ewert said his girls did an excellent job, given the wet conditions.

“They concentrated on good swing tempo and keeping their eye on top of the ball while putting.”

Chanute placed 2nd as a team, Jerlyn Kustanborter was 4th with an 88 and Lia Gutierrez was 7th with a 96.

In SEK results, Chanute finished 2nd in the league. Kustanborter placed 4th in league, Timmen Goracke and Gutierrez tied for 7th in the league, and had a playoff hole, ending with Lia 7th and Timmen 8th. Megan Kueser made it four in the top 10, with a 10th place finish.

“I’m super proud of how the girls competed in less than ideal conditions,” Ewert said.

The team traveled to Independence Country Club Monday for the final regular season tournament.
