Sparks and drivers fly at Humboldt Speedway‏
Updated: July 04, 2014 - 3:35 pm

The long Independence Day weekend kicked off on Thursday, July 3rd at Humboldt Speedway with an enormous fireworks display and red hot racing action on the Kansas dirt.

Race fans Jim and Becky Grubber and the Jeremy Chambers Race team combined forces and offered up $50.00 to each class for (A) the longest tow by a driver in each division and (B) the Hard Charger in each division. Added money donated by track officials brought the B-Mod purse to $500.00 to win. USRA “A” Mods raced for a cool $2,000.00 to win. Stock Car, B-Mods, and A Mods were all in contention for valuable USRA national points. Which made for some really good racing action for the fans in the stands.

The big show was, as always, The USRA Modifieds feature, won by Jeremy Payne of Springfield, Mo. Payne led the 35 lap event wire to wire. Runner up was Thomas Tillison, Matt Dotson finished third. The top five were rounded out by Darron Fuqua and Ryan Phillips. Burlington, Iowa driver Ryan Cook took the cash for longest tow, and Matt Dodson passed the most cars, coming out of one of the “B” features to finish third.

Derrek Wilson has been so fast and won so many features in this year’s Pure Stock class that an anonymous race fan posted a $100.00 “Bounty” for someone to outrun him in a feature event. After a month of eluding the posse, Wilson was defeated this night by Mike Churning. The finish was spectacular, with Wilson, Churning, and Wayne Johnson trading paint in the final lap and the final few feet of dirt from turn four to the flag stand, all the while the huge crowd on their feet, roaring their approval. In the end, Wilson took second, Johnson third, Chance Monday fourth, and Don McIntosh fifth. Allen Winters was deemed the Hard Charger, with the longest tow by Zoe Hannah of Independence, Mo.

With the long weekend and the chance for USRA National points, the Stock Car division ranks tripled in size Friday night; the feature captured by Michael Harward of Floris, Iowa. Second went to local ace David Matlock, while Tyler James, James King, and Corey Strothman rounded out the “Fab Five”. Matlock was deemed the “Hard Charger”, while Corey Strothman came all the way from Mt. Union, Iowa, making his the “Longest Tow”.

The massive and hotly contested USRA B-Mod feature saw Bonner Springs brothers Ethan and Lucas Issacs finish one-two. Third was Yancy Shepard from Smithville, Missouri, who also made the longest haul. Tim Phillips was fourth, Jimmie Davis fifth. Tyler Kidwell passed more cars than anyone else in the feature, and was crowned “Hard Charger”

Coming up next Friday, fans are encouraged to wear their “Daisy Dukes and Cowboy Boots” to the races. Regular admission rates will apply. The Midwest Outlaw Vintage Racers will be making their first appearance of the season.
