Helen Louise Arthur, 84, formerly of rural Erie, died Wednesday, Nov. 24, 2010, at the Pinecrest Nursing Home in Humboldt.

Helen was born in rural Erie on May 10, 1926, the daughter of John C. and Winnie E. (Romine) LaRue. She attended Grady School and Royster Junior High and graduated from Chanute High School in 1944.

She married Milton Joe Arthur on July 23, 1944, in Chanute. He preceded her in death on Oct. 28, 2003. The couple were married for 59 years and lived on the family farm from 1945 until 2004. Helen had been a resident of Pinecrest Nursing Home for the past six years.

Helen was a homemaker and retired from the post office in 1988 as a rural mail carrier. She is a former member of the Shaw Christian Church, a 4-H leader, enjoyed sewing and was a member of the Do Si Do square dance club.

Helen is survived by two daughters, Sandra Kusel and her husband Tony of rural Erie, and Barbara Black and her husband Bo of Rogers, Ark.; two sons, Larry Arthur and his wife Carol of Valrico, Fla., and John Arthur and his wife Mitzi of Chanute; seven grandchildren, Kim Ramsey, Kelly Kusel, Christopher Black, Tim Arthur, Nicole Kirby, Jeremy Arthur and Jennifer Kellogg; and eight great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband Milton “Joe”; and three brothers, Harold, Joe and Homer LaRue.

Services will be at 2 p.m. on Thursday at the Shaw Christian Church.

Burial will follow in Shaw Cemetery.

The family will receive friends on Wednesday from 6:30 p.m. until 7:30 p.m. at the Penwell-Gabel Johnson Chapel in Chanute.

Memorials in her name may be made to the Alzheimer’s Foundation and left with the funeral home.
