Nelson “Ed” Simmers, 75, Yates Center, died at his home on Nov/ 23, 2010. He had been battling lung cancer and heart complications.

Ed was born June 1, 1935 in Penn Laird, Va., to Warner and Winnie Gardner Simmers. He spent his childhood and high school years in Virginia. He then joined the United States Air Force and was stationed in Topeka, serving four years. After his enlistment, Ed attended Washburn University earning a degree in Economics.

He was united in marriage to Janice Dame on August 12, 1961. She survives, of the home.

In the course of his life Ed had several occupations, from credit manager at Sears to mastering animal husbandry managing a dairy farm. Of late he was employed at Jump Start in Yates Center.

Also surviving are a son, Brian Simmers, Valley Center; a daughter, Lorie Eyler, Lawrence; three grandchildren; one great grandchild; his mother, Winnie Simmers, Harrisonburg, Va.; three brothers, Marvin Simmers, Atlanta, Ga., Garland Simmers, Harrisonburg, Va., and Marion Simmers, Bridgewater, Va.; and one sister, Jean Jones, Charlottsville, Va.

Simmers was cremated and a graveside service will be held at a later date. Memorial contributions may be made to Friends for Life and sent in care of Campbell Funeral Home, P.O. Box 188, Yates Center, KS 66783
