Clara A. “Carol” Houston, 81, Chanute,died Wednesday, Feb. 16, 2011 at the Neosho Memorial Regional Medical Center in Chanute.

Carol was born in Lampson, Wis., on Nov. 25, 1929, the daughter of Lowell Elston and Anna Moe Bright She graduated from Sweetwater Union High School in California in 1948.

She was united in marriage to Chester E. Houston on Feb. 19, 1949 in Chula Vista, Calif. As a supportive wife of a career Naval Officer they lived many places.

She was most happy in her role as mother and grandmother. She loved to play cards, travel and read and spend time with family and friends.

Carol is survived by her children, Becky Lopp and her husband, Bob, Bettendorf, Iowa, Kathy Jones and her husband, David, Chanute, and Bill Houston and his wife, Rhonda, The Woodlands, Texas; grandchildren, Melanie Bradford and her husband, Chris, Carol Stream, Ill., Dr. Brian Lopp and his wife, Dr. Lauri Lopp, Springfield, Ill., Eric Lopp and his partner, Dennis McCoy, Fairfield, Iowa, Drew Jones and his wife, Carissa, Ankeny, Iowa, Rachel Cleaver and her husband, Chris, Chanute, and Amy Freshwater, Spring, Texas; great-grandchildren, Drayton Cleaver, Clara Jones, Olivia Jones, Greta Lopp, Stella Lopp, Hugh Lopp, Miranda Freshwater and Bryan Saladiner; siblings, Rossi Alderson, Seal Beach, Calif., Lowell Bright, Manteca, Calif., Iora Davis, Tehachapi, Calif., Julie Fry, New Richmond, Ind., Lois Taylor, Walnut Creek, Calif.. and Lola Wilcoxson, Manhattan; many cousins, nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband Chester; two sisters, Margaret Calkins and Ardeane Schellschmidt; and a brother, John Bright.

Cremation has taken place.

There will not be a funeral service, but a private scattering of her ashes will be held at a later date.

Memorials in her name may be made to Chanute Senior Center or to the National Military Family Association and may be left with the funeral home.
