William “Bill” Babcock, 74, Thayer, died Thursday, April 28, 2011 at the Wichita Specialty Hospital in Wichita.

“Bill” was born in rural Altoona, in Wilson County, on July 29, 1936, the son of Roy and Erma Blaker Babcock. He graduated from Thayer High School in 1954.

He served in the Air Force from 1955 until his retirement in1975, reaching the rank of Tech Sergeant, stationed in California, New Mexico, Germany, and Washington D.C.

After retiring from the military, he worked at Fort AP Hill for 17 years and Martin Marietta for six years while living in the Washington D.C. area. He moved back to Thayer in 1998.

William was a member of the Thayer Christian Church and was a Lifetime Member of the National American Legion. He served as Commander for the Chanute American Legion.

He enjoyed hunting, fishing, and watching sports with family and friends.

William is survived by a brother, Kenneth Babcock and his wife, Louise, Wichita; and six nieces and their families.

He was preceded in death by his parents Roy and Erma Babcock; a brother Charles Babcock; and companion, Barbara Carneal.

Funeral will be 2 p.m. today, May 3 at Penwell-Gabel Funeral Home Gibson Chapel.

Burial will follow in Altoona Cemetery.

Memorials in his name may be made to Chanute American Legion and may be left with the funeral home.
