Larry Thompson died in Leawood on Wednesday, May 11, 2011. He was born in Chanute to Gus and Litha Thompson, who, along with his son Yale and his grandson Liam, preceded him in death. He obtained his Bachelor’s degree from Emerson College in Boston and his Master’s degree from the University of Kansas.

He is survived by his wife, Oksana, daughter, Tiffany, and grandson, Ocea.

Larry began his film and photography career at the Parsons State Hospital and Training Center, making films related to research of special-needs children. He continued as an educational film producer and director at Boston University and did film projects with the Bureau of Child Research at the University of Kansas. In time, he returned to Parsons as Director of Media at the Parsons State Hospital and Training Center and also founded Words & Pictures Corporation. Eventually, his interests in film, television, telecommunications, and advertising brought him to Kansas City and the ownership of his own photography business, which included events photography. Throughout his life, Larry was recognized by numerous non-profit organizations for the donated photographic services that he provided.

Aside from work, Larry thoroughly enjoyed spending time with his family. He also loved to play golf, travel, and sail. Animals, of which he had many, were another one of his passions.

A private memorial will be held to honor Larry’s life. In lieu of flowers, the family would appreciate written memories of Larry. For those so inclined, donations may be made to the Yale Thompson Memorial Scholarship at Berklee College of Music, 1140 Boylston Street, Boston, MA 02115.

Condolences may be shared with the family at www.CremationCenterKC.com.

Arrangements are by Cremation Center of KC, Shawnee Mission.
