Wayne Wilkins, 68, Erie, died Tuesday, May 10, 2011 at the St. John’s Regional Medical Center in Joplin.

He was born Dec. 23, 1942 at Roxton, Texas to J.C. and L.E. Wilkins. He grew up in the Roxton area and attended schools there. He moved to the Erie area in 1976 where he owned and operated Wilkins Construction for 35 years.

He and Delores “Dee” Mattox were married on Nov, 18, 1977 at Miami, Okla. She survives, of the home.

He was a member of the First Christian Church at Erie where he volunteered his construction skills on several projects at the church. He enjoyed collecting coins and woodworking, and watching wrestling with his grandchildren. He loved his grandchildren dearly and loved sharing his life with them. He was also a former member of the Elks Lodge.

In addition to his wife he is survived by five sons, Ron Mattox and his wife, Kathy. Olathe, Don Mattox and his wife, Roberta, rural Erie, Travis Mattox, Olathe, Steve Mattox and his wife, Debbie, St. Paul, Earl Wilkins, Jr., Bossier City, La.; two daughters, Susan Geier and her husband, Steve, Erie, Roxanne Bingham and her husband, Tim, Thayer; one brother, Norman Wilkins, Houston, Texas; three sisters, Mary Lou Wilkins, Bossier City, La., Shelia Lewis and her husband, Eric, Broken Bow, Okla., and Judy Deramus and her husband, Doug, Broken Bow, Okla.. Wayne and Dee also opened their home and hearts to numerous foster children over the years.

He was preceded in death by his parents and one brother, Jerry Wilkins.

Funeral will be 10:30 a.m. Saturday, May 14 at the First Christian Church in Erie. Burial will follow in the East Hill Cemetery. The family will receive friends at the Pierce-Carson-Wall Funeral Home in Erie from 6 to 8 this evening.
