Mary Frances Thummel, 80, Iola, died Wednesday, May 18, 2011 at the Neosho Memorial Regional Medical Center in Chanute.

Mary Frances was born Jan. 31, 1931 at Piqua, the daughter of Bernard and Julia Ulrich Konen. She grew up at Piqua where she attended St. Martin’s Catholic School through the 8th grade. She graduated from Iola High School.

Mary Frances was married to Charles Thummel. They had four children and later divorced.

Mary Frances has made her home at Piqua, Iola, and Chanute most of her life. She worked for Kustom Electronics in Chanute, Pinecrest Nursing Home in Humboldt as a nurse’s aide, and at Wal-Mart in Chanute until she retired 15 years ago.

She was a member of St. Patrick’s Catholic Church and Altar Society in Chanute. Mary Frances enjoyed crocheting, knitting, watching sports — especially KU basketball, and spending time with her grandchildren.

Survivors include her four children, Marsha Bogle and husband, Mark, Chanute, Joni Thummel, Humboldt, Rodney Thummel and wife, Kay, Yates Center, and Clifford Thummel and, wife, Tresha, Humboldt; a brother, Gerald Konen and wife, Dorothy, Little River; 12 grandchildren, Heath Scheibmeir and wife, Aurie, Zeb Scheibmeir, Erica Phillips and husband, Brian, Jess Bogle, Megan Gann and husband, Matt, Rebekah Thummel, Serah Thummel, Tim Thummel, Tabrenah Thummel, Mikal Larsen Berthot and Aaron Nietfeld; 10 great-grandchildren, Eric Phillips, Daniel Scheibmeir, Corinne Scheibmeir, Kira Scheibmeir, Joseph Gann, Asia Larsen, Alec Berthot, Adrianne Morrison, Austin Nietfeld and Jade Nietfeld.

She was preceded in death by her parents Ben and Julia Konen, grandson Joe Bogle and brother Robert “Butch” Konen.

The parish rosary will be recited at 10 a.m. Saturday, May 21 at St. Martin’s Catholic Church in Piqua, followed by the mass at 10:30 a.m. The Rev. Robert B. Wachter will be celebrant.

Visitation is 6 to 7:30 p.m. Friday at Waugh-Yokum and Friskel Chapel in Iola.

Inurnment will be in St. Martin’s Catholic Cemetery in Piqua at a later date.
