Velma Marie Grogan, 95, Independence, formerly of Chanute, died Thursday, May 19, 2011 at Mercy Hospital in Independence.

Velma was born in Chanute on Dec. 17, 1915, the daughter of Arthur Edwin and Edna C. Underhill Turner. She graduated from Chanute High School.

She was a lifelong resident of Chanute where she lived at 1428 S. Highland for a majority of that time. In March 2010 she moved to Independence and lived at Regal Estate for the past 15 months until her death.

She was united in marriage to Ira John Grogan in June of 1936 in Chanute.

He preceded her in death on Oct. 27, 1966.

She was a homemaker.

Velma was a life-long member of the United Brethren in Christ Church in Chanute.

She enjoyed quilting, crocheting and reading. She was a member of United Brethren in Christ Church since her birth and served as church pianist and treasurer. She loved her church and devoted her life to serving the Lord.

She is survived by a daughter, Marie White and son-in-law Bill White, Independence; a son, Robert Grogan and daughter-in-law Bertha Grogan, Catoosa, Okla.; five grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; one great-great grandson; two sisters, Flossie Taylor, Chanute, and Mary Chase, Lawrence; two brothers, John Turner, Wichita, and Gerald Turner, Thayer.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; three brothers, Marvin Turner, Edwin Turner, Jr., and Max Turner; and one sister Luella Taylor.

Funeral will be 11 a.m. at New Life United Brethren in Christ Church, 500 N. Forest in Chanute, on Monday, May 23, 2011. Burial will follow in Memorial Park Cemetery in Chanute.

The family will receive friends on Sunday from 3 to 5 p.m. at the Penwell-Gabel Johnson Chapel.

Memorials in her name may be made to New Life United Brethren in Christ Church and may be left with the funeral home.

Penwell-Gabel Johnson Chapel located at 101 N. Highland in Chanute is in charge of arrangements.
