Johnny E. Leroy, Jr., 77, Chanute, died Tuesday, May 31, 2011 at his residence in Chanute.

Johnny was born in Chanute on Sept. 19, 1933, the son of Johnny and Pearl Morehead Leroy. He graduated from Chanute High School. He was married to Ruth Ross of Iola for many years. They later divorced.

He was a great athlete growing up and played many sports including baseball, football, basketball, and boxing. He had his pilots license and loved to fly, fish, and spending time with his family, especially his grandchildren.

He is survived by three daughters, Julie Follmer, Chanute, Stacy Carpenter and husband, Shane, Chanute, and Kit Rogers, Humboldt; three grandsons, Ryan Follmer, Chanute, Gavin Solomon, Chanute, and Trezz Rogers, Humboldt; two granddaughters, Siara Carpenter, Chanute, and Kaleena Cummings, Chanute; six great-grandchildren; and two nephews and one niece.

He was preceded in death by his parents and several aunts and uncles.

Cremation has taken place.

A memorial service will be held at 10 a.m. Friday, June 3 at Penwell-Gabel Funeral Home Johnson Chapel

Memorials in his name may be made to the Cherry Street Youth Center and may be left with the funeral home.
