Mara was born at Chanute on May 23, 1923, the daughter of Alphonso and Ethel Bever Knapp. She graduated from Chanute High School.
She married F.C.J. “Mulie” Muilenburg on May 21, 1954 in Albuquerque, N.M. He preceded her in death in 2001.
She was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Chanute.
She moved to Albuquerque in 1944 and worked for Sandia Corporation, a prime contractor for the Atomic Energy Commission. They raised and showed Arabian horses. One of those horses was a Reserve Grand Champion. In 1967 she moved to Coronado, Calif., and was employed by Lee Mather Company Realtor as the manager of the accounting department. She also had a real estate license and sold property. After her husband retired in 1981 they moved back to Chanute.
She is survived by one nephew, Kurt Johnson and wife, Felecia, Chanute; great-nephew Luke Johnson, Chanute, great-nieces Abby Johnson, Chanute, and Alicia Turner, Lawrence; and two nieces-in-law, Athena Johnson, Lawrence, and Sharon Young, LeCompton.
She was preceded in death by one daughter, Kay Sue; her parents, husband; one brother and five sisters.
A graveside service will be held 11 a.m. Saturday, June 11 at the Neosho County Cemetery. She will be in-state today from noon to 7 p.m. at the Penwell-Gabel Johnson Chapel.
Memorials in her name may be made to the American Cancer Society or First United Methodist Church in Chanute and may be left with the funeral home.
