Russel Spohn, 81, lifelong resident of Fredonia, died at his home on Friday, Dec. 30, 2011. He was born Jan, 8, 1930 in Fredonia, the son of Charles Albert and Lenora Isabel Carpenter Spohn. Russel was a 1948 graduate of Fredonia High School. He served as a sergeant in the United States Army 1951-1953.
On April 14, 1951, in Fredonia, Russel was united in marriage to Maurita Joan Opperman. She survives, of the home.
Russel was employed and eventually became co-owner of Kansas Bank Note Company in Fredonia. In addition, he was a farmer and a cattleman for most of his life.
He was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Fredonia.
Survivors, in addition to his wife, Maurita, inlcude two sons, Richard Spohn, Fredonia, Roger Spohn, Lawrence; a sister, Edna Hollis, Fredonia; two grandchildren; three great-granddaughters.
A graveside service will be held at 2 pm Wednesday, Jan. 4 at the Fredonia City Cemetery. The family will receive friends this evening, 5 to 7 pm at Timmons Funeral Home. A memorial has been established in Russel’s name with Harry Hynes Memorial Hospice and contributions can be sent to PO Box 168, Fredonia, KS, 66736.
