On January 12, 2012 The Lord sent his angels from heaven to bring Gertrude home to be by his side. Gertrude, 93, was born in St. Paul on Dec. 19, 1918, the daughter of Phillip and Mary Helen Paulie Born. She married Ralph A. Hoffman on Jan. 26, 1942 in Girard. He preceded her in death on August 14, 1969.

Gertrude was a member of St. Patrick’s Catholic Church, where she was a member of the Altar Society. She was a member of the VFW and American Legion Ladies Auxiliaries of Chanute. She loved baking, quilting, gardening, raising cattle, and going fishing.

Gertrude is survived by her four children, Ralph B. Hoffman and wife, Judy, Afton, Okla., Grace Marie Winchester, Las Vegas, Nev., James A. Hoffman, Chanute, and Sandra Gouvion and her husband, Ron, Chanute; nine grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; one great-great grandchild; two brothers, Phillip Born and wife Patricia, Nampa, Idaho, and Eugene Born and wife, Mary, Eudora; and four sisters, Clara Webb and husband, Val, Chanute, Regina Greenlee and husband, Bob, Lawrence, Mary Ann Duling, Girard, and Betty Roberts and husband, Max, Erie.

She was preceded in death by her husband, parents, five brothers, Francis, Edward, Albert, George, and Lawrence Born, and two sisters, Barbara Skinner and Margaret Shopper-Kaffenberger.

Mass of Christian Burial will 10:30 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 14 at St. Patrick Catholic Church. Interment will follow in St. Patrick Catholic Cemetery.

The family will receive friends on this evening from 8 until 9 p.m. at the Parish Hall at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church. Rosary will be recited at 7 p.m.

Memorials in her name may be made to The Alzheimer’s Association and may be left with the funeral home.
