Merlin Howard “Lucky” Ware, 84, a 62-year resident of Altoona, died Tuesday, May 22, 2012 at Golden Living Center in Fredonia. He was born June 5, 1927, near Coyville, the son of Oliver and Viola Busby Ware. Merlin was a graduate of Coyville High School. He served in the United States Army July 21, 1945 to Jan. 24, 1947, earning the rank of corporal.

On Jan, 27, 1948, Merlin was united in marriage to Patsy Marie Fischer. She preceded him in death Dec. 4, 1994.

Merlin was a self-employed painter, known for the many signs he painted for more than 50 years.

Merlin is survived by a son-in-law, Rodger Shinn, Fredonia; a grandson; a sister: Margaret Shafer, Neodesha.

He was also preceded in death by a daughter Dianna Shinn.

A graveside service will be held at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, May 30 at the Altoona Cemetery with military honors conducted by VFW Posts 3018 and 1022 and VFW Past District Officers. Memorials have been established with the Fredonia VFW Post 3018 and the Fredonia American Legion Post and contributions may be sent to Timmons Funeral Home, PO Box 168, Fredonia, KS, 66736.
