Alvina Frances Peters, 89, of Iola, Kansas, mother of Dennis Peters and wife, Nadine of Chanute, died Sunday, Feb. 8, 2009, at the Allen County Hospital in Iola.

She was born Oct. 25, 1919, at Ost, KS, to Arthur & Madeline (Evertz) Orth. On Aug. 10, 1944, she married Francis “Pete” Peters at Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church in Wichita. They made their home in Wichita until moving to Iola in 1949, where they raised their family of 6 boys and 2 girls. Her husband preceded her in death Oct. 18, 1983.

She worked for H.L. Miller & Son Dress Factory in Iola for 12 1/2 years before retiring. She was a member of St. John’s Catholic Church, Altar Society and craft group. She was also a member of the LaHarpe Ladies V.F.W. Auxiliary. Her hobbies included quilting, sewing and collecting thimbles from around the world.

Survivors include:

5 sons: Eugene Peters and wife, Karen - Broken Arrow, Okla., Dennis Peters and wife, Nadine - Chanute, Mark Peters and wife, Virginia - Iola, ,Francis Peters and wife, Gracie - Morgan Hill, Calif., Louis Peters & wife, Cynthia - Blue Springs, Mo., 2 daughters: Carol Wilson husband, Mark - Gas, Kathy Peters - Olathe; 1 daughter-in-law: Roxy Peters - Iola; 13 grandchildren and 18 great-grandchildren; 3 sisters: Sister Lorene Orth - Wichita, Evelyn Jacobs - Wichita, Maggie Robinson - Enid, Okla.

She was preceded in death by her husband, a son, Joseph, 4 brothers, Elmer, Arthur, Jr., Lawrence and Raymond Orth and by a sister, Millie Orth.

Visitation will be 6-8 p.m. Tuesday, at Waugh-Yokum & Friskel Chapel in Iola.

The parish rosary will be recited at 10 a.m. Wednesday, Feb. 11, at St. John’s Catholic Church in Iola. The mass will be celebrated at 10:30 a.m. by the Rev. Robert Wachter, celebrant. Burial will follow in Highland Cemetery in Iola.

Memorials are suggested to St. John’s Catholic Church, American Diabetes Association or American Heart Association, and may be left with Waugh-Yokum & Friskel Memorial Chapel of Iola, which is in charge of arrangements. Online condolences may be left at www.iolafuneral.com.
