David Waggoner, 58, of Chanute, passed away Sunday, August 12, 2012, at the Hospice House in Kansas City, Missouri after battling cancer for over a year.
David was born October 28, 1953 in Chanute, Kansas the son of Homer and Ruth Bower Waggoner. He was the youngest of 6 children. He attended the Union Valley one room school house through middle school; graduated from Chanute High School in 1971 and Neosho County Community College in 1973.
David was Shipping Supervisor for Ash Grove Cement Company in Chanute and a loyal employee with them for 30 years.
He sang bass in the Minute Men Quartet for several years. As an active lifelong member of First Baptist Church he served on multiple boards and committees and also taught Sunday school for over 30 years. He spent several years coaching his children in baseball and softball and was a 2 term member of the Chanute Public School’s board of directors where he was instrumental in the decision to build the new high school and elementary school. David had lived in two houses his entire life; the one he grew up in and the one he built for his wife and himself. For his daughter Tara and son-in-law Chris, he helped to completely renovate his childhood home. In 2008 he and his son Derek built another home for his family and a business for his daughter-in-law Karra. You rarely saw him without a tape measure, carpenters pencil, and a truckload of 2 x 4’s. David could be seen every Friday night with his family at the Chanute Blue Comet football games and was passionate about K-State sports and Royals baseball. David was strong in his faith and in the love of his family and community. He will be dearly missed.
David is survived by his wife of 32 years, Ruthanne Crawford Waggoner; one daughter Tara Bilby, her husband Chris, and their sons Landen, Logan, and Lawson; son Derek Waggoner and his wife Karra and their children Autumn and John David; brothers Joseph of Millbrook Alabama, Hank of Chanute, and sister Sharon Collins of Broken Arrow Oklahoma.
David is preceded in death by his parents Homer and Ruth Waggoner, a brother Bill, and a sister Dorothy Haden.
Funeral services will be held at the First Baptist Church Good News Center at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, August 18, 2012. Interment will be at Union Valley Cemetery. There will be a private graveside service for family following the church service.
The family will receive friends on Friday, August 17, 2012 from 5:30 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at the First Baptist Church Sanctuary.
Memorials in his name may be made to Faith House Chanute or Hope Lodge of Kansas City, MO and may be left with the funeral home.
