Orpha Marie Sandberg, 90, died Friday, February 20, 2009, at John Randolph Hospital, Hopewell, Va.

She was born Sept. 13, 1918, in Cherryvale to the Rev. Vernon Franklin and Mattie Olive Pilkington Cloninger.

She married Rudolph Roy Sandberg on Aug. 27, 1939, in Bartlesville, Okla. He died on May 1, 1977.

She lived most of her adult life in Chanute and in 2000 moved to Spring Grove, Va.

She was a longtime member of Grant Avenue Baptist Church, where she was very active in the music program playing the piano and organ. She was involved in the Women’s Missionary Society serving in roles of leadership. She also enjoyed and was very faithful in contacting and visiting people for the Lord.

Survivors include a son and daughter-in-law, Ronald and Lynn Ann Sandberg, Lamar, Mo.; a daughter and son-in-law, Marcia and James Richard Bailey, Spring Grove, Va.; two grandsons and their wives, Brent and Whitney Sandberg, Highland, Ill., and John and Akari Bailey, Statesville, N.C.; two granddaughters and their husbands, Michelle and Robert Castle and Angela and John O’Rawe, all of Spring Grove; 10 great-grandchildren and their spouses, Sarah and Joshua Cardman, Samuel Castle, David O’Rawe, Michael and Rachael Claiborne, Maya Hubbs, Isabelle and Isaac Sandberg, and Leo and Emmie Bailey.

She was preceded in death by her husband of 38 years; two brothers and sisters-in-law, Alonzo and Mona and Lawrence and Mary Cloninger; and a granddaughter, Kathryn Bailey Claiborne.

A family memorial service will be held at a later date in Virginia. Graveside services will be 11 a.m. Wednesday at the Memorial Park Cemetery in Chanute under the direction of Penwell-Gabel Johnson Chapel.
