Doris Ladine Holmes, 92, Frontenac, died Sunday, March 1, 2009, at Sunset Manor Nursing Home in Frontenac.

She was born Feb. 3, 1917, in Humboldt to Robert and Grace Andruss Hamm. She attended schools in and around Humboldt, graduating from Humboldt High School in 1935 and Iola Junior College in 1937.

She taught in a rural school near Humboldt and in Humboldt Grade School.

On Aug. 24, 1941, she married Arl Holmes of Elsmore. They moved to Chanute in 1951. He died on May 27, 1993.

She worked as a PBX Operator for Neosho Memorial Hospital until her retirement in 1989.

She was a Girl Scout leader for several years, was active in the First United Methodist Church and the Women’s Society of Christian Service, which became the United Methodist Women in 1972, Chapter DD P.E.O., St. Cecilia Music Club, some study clubs, and was a Red Cross Auxiliary Volunteer at Neosho Memorial Hospital.

Survivors include a sister, Julia Blattner, Frontenac; a brother, J. Robert Hamm, Wichita; and several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by a sister.

Funeral will be 1 p.m. Friday at First United Methodist Church in Chanute. Burial will follow in Mt. Hope Cemetery, Humboldt, under the direction of Penwell-Gabel Johnson Chapel.

The family will receive friends from noon to 1 p.m. Friday at the church.
