Carmel C. O’Malley died Friday, August 22, 2008, at Guest Home Estates in Erie, where she had been a resident for the past three and a half years.
O’Malley was born Nov. 11, 1908 at Crestline. Her parents were William H. Meyer and Ida M. Steensma Meyer.
She married John Ralph O’Malley on April 25, 1934, at St. Bridget’s Catholic Church in Scammon. He preceded her in death on June 6, 1997. She has been a member of St. Bridget’s parish since 1934.
She attended Bird Elementary School, College High School and Kansas State Teacher’s College, all in or near Pittsburg. She received her Life Teaching Certificate in 1930 and her BSED in 1962. She taught elementary school for 22 years at Council Corners, Mt. Hope, Baxter Springs, and Weir.
She was a member of St. Bridget’s Altar Society for 75 years. She was also a member of the Cherokee County Extension Homemaker/Family Community Education Program for 75 years, where she held all local unit offices and served on the County Council.
In addition, she held membership in St. Ambrose Altar Society (Erie); District and Diocesan Council of Catholic Women; St. Luke’s Circle of Daughter’s of Isabella (St. Paul). She was a Lifetime member of the Cherokee County Retired Teacher’s Association and a member of the Weir Senior Citizens Group. She was a member of the Cherokee County Farm Bureau, where she served as Safety Chair and Women Chairman. She was named Farm Bureau Woman of the Year in 1961.
She and her husband traveled extensively visiting all of the 50 states and 23 countries.
She is survived by her daughters, Lois Carlson, Erie, (married to Jim Carlson) and Mary Ann Shurtz Oakton, Va., (married to Richard R Shurtz II); one brother Wayne Meyer, Pittsburg; five grandchildren: Brian Carlson, St. Paul, Michael Carlson, Flanders, N.J.; John Carlson, Erie, Jessica Shurtz Miniuk, Leesburg, Va.; and Richard R. Shurtz III, Oakton, Va. She has 16 great grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents; three brothers, Virgil, Joe, and Florn Meyer, and one sister, Blanche Wallace).
Concelebrated Mass of Christian Burial will be 10:30 a.m. Saturday, August 30 at the St. Bridget’s Catholic Church in Scammon, with Father Chrysostom Ah Maung and Father Theodore Khin officiating. Burial will follow in the St. Bridget’s Cemetery in Scammon. A Daughters of Isabella rosary will be recited at 7 p.m. Thursday at the St. Ambrose Catholic Church in Erie, where the family will receive friends following the rosary until 8 p.m. A second parish rosary will be recited at 7 p.m. Friday at the Bath-Naylor Funeral Home in Weir, where the family will receive friends until 8 p.m. Condolences may be sent to www.bathnaylor.com Memorial contributions are suggested to the Carmel and Ralph O’Malley Scholarship Fund, PSU.
