George Leighty, 66, of Chanute died Sunday, Jan. 6, 2013 at Chanute Healthcare.

George was born on August 3, 1946, the son of Ivan and Ida Vatterodt Leighty.

He was a truck driver and enjoyed spending time with his family, especially his grandchildren.

George is survived by his three children, Samantha McMillan of Chanute, and Austin and Jamie Burke and Sierra and Craig Kirkpatrick, all of Walnut; seven grandchildren, Megan McMillan of Chanute, Katelyn Burke, Autumn Burke, Maya Burke, Jackson Burke, Zakary Kirkpatrick, and Makenna Kirkpatrik, all of Walnut; four siblings, Lester and Joan Leighty of Salina, John and Ronda Leighty of Paola, Pearl and Gordon Brown of Wichita, and Steven and Beckie Leighty of Penrose, Colo.; two sisters-in-law, Crystal Leighty of Vancouver, Wash., and Joan Leighty of Canon City, Colo.; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, and two brothers, Clyde Leighty and Charles Leighty.

Cremation has taken place.

A gathering for family and friends will take place on Jan. 19 from 2 until 4 p.m. at Penwell-Gabel Gibson Chapel.

Memorials in his name may be made to The American Cancer Society and left with the funeral home.
