Charlotte Dorothea Hartwig Lewis, 95, of Yates Center, died Wednesday, March 13, 2013 at Allen County Hospital in Iola.
Charlotte was born Dec. 27, 1917 on a farm in Woodson County, the daughter of Charles Robert and Lilie Louise Schaede Hartwig.
She attended country grade school in Woodson County until her parents moved to Humboldt, where she finished her schooling. During Charlotte’s life she had many jobs, she loved vegetable and flower gardening, canning and sewing. She was a member of the Woodson County Historical Society, Pickers and Fiddlers, and St. Peter’s Lutheran Church in Humboldt.
In 1944, Charlotte married Lawrence Farmer and the couple were blessed with a son, Lawrence “Dave” Farmer. The couple later divorced and Charlotte married William A. “Bill” Lewis on Jan. 8, 1954 at St. Peter’s Lutheran Church in Humboldt.
Charlotte was preceded in death by her parents, husband, and two brothers, Howard and Billie, sister-in-law Hilda Hartwig, two brothers-in-law, Doug Warden, Charles Lewis and his wife, Esther, a daughter-in-law Helen Farmer, and one grandson John Lewis
Charlotte is survived by two sons, Dave Farmer of Yates Center, and Jack Wayne Lewis and wife, Rhonda, of Coffeyville; one daughter: Anita Louise Farrell and her husband, Larry, of Olpe; two stepchildren: Kirk Eugene Lewis and wife, Janice, of Moore, Okla., and Maxine Lavoine Ragsdale and husband, Sam, of Topeka; two brothers, Neil Robert Hartwig and Charles S. Hartwig and wife, Helen, all of Humboldt; one sister: Joyce Warden of De Land, Fla.; two sisters-in-law, Ethel Hartwig of Yates Center and Dorothy Kujawa of Oak Brook, Ill; 12 grandchildren; 29 great-grandchildren and 21 great-great-grandchildren.
Funeral will be 1:30 p.m. Friday, March 15 at St. Peter’s Lutheran Church, Humboldt. Burial will follow in Kalida Cemetery, Yates Center,. The family will receive friends this evening from 6 to 7 p.m. at Campbell Funeral Home, Yates Center.
