Betty Jane Hurt McGuffey, 88, Chanute, died Friday, March 27, 2009 at the Neosho Memorial Regional Medical Center in Chanute.

Betty was born in Neosho County on Feb. 9, 1921, the daughter of William Robert and Gada Pearl Crater Hurt. She graduated from Chanute High School in 1939.

She was united in marriage to Francis D. McGuffey on June 15, 1939. He preceded her in death.

Betty was a member of St. Patrick’s Church, St. Patrick’s Altar Society, Sunflower and Sew N Sew Quilt Guilds and was an F.C.E. member for more than 25 years.

She is survived by four daughters, Mary Jane Burghart and husband, Garold, of Chanute, Teresa Wilson and husband, Dennis, of Wichita, Terry Smith and husband, Mike, of Portsmouth, Va., and Kimberlyn Fowler and husband, Jay, of Pittsburg; one son, Jim McGuffey and wife, Robbi, of Cheney; 15 grandchildren; 22 great-grandchildren and eight great-great grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Francis; a daughter, Martha Ann McGuffey; a granddaughter, Lisa McGuffey; a brother William Robert and a sister Nina Pearl.

Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:30 a.m. today, March 31, 2009 at St. Patrick’s Church. Burial will follow in Memorial Park Cemetery. Rosary will be recited at 10 a.m. prior to the Mass.

Memorials in her name may be made to the Cystic Fibrosis Society or St. Patrick’s School Library and may be left with the funeral home. Penwell-Gabel Gibson Chapel is in charge of arrangements.
