Almeda Jeanette Ostrander, 90, Chanute, died Friday, September 12, 2008, at Heritage Health Care Center.

She was born Aug. 26, 1918, in Ardmore, Okla., to Ralph and Ethel Maddox Hendrickson.

She attended various schools. She graduated with an Associate of Arts from Neosho County Community College in 1972 and from Pittsburg State University, receiving her Bachelor of Science with post graduate study in Elementary Education and Psychology in 1981.

She married Earl Ostrander on Aug. 26, 1936, in Olathe. He survives.

She worked at Truitt’s Greenhouse, as secretary for Capital Truck Lines, a librarian’s assistant at Chanute High School from 1970 to 1979, and as founder and director of the Lifetime Learning Program at NCCC for 14 years.

She was a member of First Christian Church and the Chanute VFW Auxiliary.

Other survivors include three daughters and sons-in-law, Emily Ann and Richard Guentert, Des Moines, Iowa, Peggy and Duane Forbes, Pratt, and Rita and Jay Waltermire, Garnett; a brother, Jim Hendrickson, Centerburg, Ohio; two sisters, Marilyn Patrick, Columbus, Ohio, and Lyndall Carrol, Centerburg, Ohio; seven grandchildren; and 15 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by a brother, Donald Hendrickson; three sisters, Julia Salzgaber, Mabel Eisele and Lillian Straub; and a grandchild, Brenda Forbes.

Funeral will be 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at First Christian Church in Chanute. Graveside services will be 2 p.m. at the Fredonia City Cemetery.

Visitation will be after 10 a.m. today at Penwell-Gabel Gibson Chapel. The family will receive friends from 7 to 8 p.m. today at the mortuary.

Contributions may be made to First Christian Church in Chanute in care of the mortuary.
