Eugene W. Carter, 84, Thayer, died Wednesday, June 3, 2009, at Neosho Memorial Regional Medical Center.

He was born Nov. 4, 1924, in Thayer to Luther B. and Amy Henderson Carter. He graduated from Thayer High School.

He served in the U.S. Army from 1943 to 1945. He was discharged from the military with a purple heart with oak leaf cluster and three bronze stars.

He married Dorothy Briley on June 2, 1946, in Thayer. They were married 63 years.

He was employed as a maintenance worker for Bush Hog Manufacturing in Galesburg for 21 years until his retirement.

Survivors include by his loving wife, Dorothy; a daughter and son-in-law, Jimmy Sr. and Janice Peterson, Thayer; a brother, Richard Carter, Great Falls, Mont.; four grandchildren, Jeff Peterson, Erie, Jimmy Peterson Jr., Pittsburg, Julie Thompson, Chanute, and Jerry Peterson, Kansas City; and seven great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by two brothers, Ralph and Harold Carter; and three sisters, Gladys Vining, Mary Babcock and Hazel Gudde.

Graveside services will be 2 p.m. Monday at Mt. Hope Cemetery in Galesburg under the direction of Penwell-Gabel Gibson Chapel, Chanute.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 8 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home.

Contributions to Horizon Hospice may be left with the funeral home.
