Velma Virgie McGuire, 94, died Sunday, Jan. 3, 2010 at the Heritage Healthcare Center in Chanute.

Velma was born in LaHarpe on April 15, 1915, the daughter of Leslie and Alice Dolly Lacey Sprague. She was raised by her grandparents, Elvis and Ella Sprague. She grew up and attended schools in LaHarpe.

She was united in marriage to John Clifton “Cliff” McGuire. He preceded her in death on Dec. 24, 1994.

She worked as a bookkeeper for her husband in his John Deere business in Bartlesville, Okla., and then in Chanute when they moved the business here in 1959.

Velma started the Senior Centers in Chanute and Erie.

She is survived by a son, George “Mack” McGuire, Las Vegas, Nev.; a daughter, Neola Lewis, Dallas, Texas; three grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

Along with her husband, John, she was preceded in death by her parents.

Memorial service will be 10 a.m. on Saturday, Jan. 9 at the Penwell-Gabel Gibson Chapel in Chanute. Burial will follow in LaHarpe Cemetery, LaHarpe.

Memorials in her name may be made to the charity of the donor’s choice and may be left with the funeral home.
