Helen Elizabeth Potts Smith, 94, died Tuesday, February 9, 2010, at the Heritage Health Care Center in Chanute.

She was born July 23, 1915, in Butler, Mo., to William Buck and Josephine Rippatoe Potts. She attended schools in Butler and moved to Chanute on June 6, 1941.

She married O’Neal Smith Sr. on April 21, 1942, in Chanute. He died on July 30, 1994.

She was a homemaker.

She was a member of the New Hope Baptist Church and the OES Vashti Chapter #60.

Survivors include a son, O’Neal Smith Jr., Chanute; a daughter, Mary Kay Smith Thompson, Grandview, Mo.; three grandsons, O’Neal Smith III, and Alex and Aaron Curls, all of Chanute; and her long-time companion, William Cole, Chanute.

She was preceded in death by three brothers, Ralph, George and Joe Potts; and a sister, Mary Roe.

Graveside services will be 10 a.m. Saturday at the Elmwood Cemetery. Penwell-Gabel Gibson Chapel is in charge of arrangements.

The family will receive friends from 9 to 9:45 a.m. Saturday at the Penwell-Gabel Gibson Chapel in Chanute.

Contributions may be made to the charity of the donor’s choice in care of the funeral home.
