Orris Sheldon Cox, 90, Petrolia, died Wednesday, February 24, 2010, at his home.

He was born May 4, 1919, in Dewey, Okla., to Argus Lloyd and Stella Agnes Mason Cox. He attended schools in Chanute and Topeka.

He married Lucille M. Hainback on Nov. 25, 1947, in Iola. She survives.

He joined the U.S. Army in November 1942 and was discharged in November 1945. He was a Ground Aircraft Observer, having served in Normandy, Northern France, Ardennes, Rhineland and Central Europe. He received the American Theater Ribbon, European-African-Middle East Ribbon, the Victory Medal and the Good Conduct Medal.

He retired from the Kansas Army Ammunition Plant in Parsons.

Other survivors include two daughters, Linda Cox, Ogden, Iowa, and Sandra Cox, Chanute; and a son, Steve Cox, Chanute.

Cremation has taken place. A graveside inurnment will be 10:30 a.m. Saturday at the Altoona Cemetery. Penwell-Gabel Johnson Chapel is in charge of arrangements.

Contributions to Castaways Animal Shelter may be left with the funeral home.
