Ruby Hughes, 79, Chanute, died Wednesday, March 31, 2010 at the Wesley Medical Center in Wichita.

Ruby was born in Wayside on June 14, 1930, the daughter of Daniel and Zelda Wright Bennett. She graduated from high school in Independence.

She was united in marriage to Shobe O. Hughes on Sept. 26, 1948. He preceded her in death in 1978.

Ruby worked in retail sales.

She was a member of the Cecil J. Meeker Post #1654 V.F.W. and the Boerstler-May Post #170, American Legion.

She loved bowling, traveling, and spending time with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Ruby is survived by three sons, Ed Hughes and his wife, Vicki, Chanute, Rick Hughes and his wife, Debbie, Erie, and Jerry Hughes and his wife, Marty, Chanute; a daughter, Pam Hughes, Morehead; 10 grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren; three brothers, Melvin Bennett and Max Bennett, both of Syracuse, and Chet Bennett, Cave Creek, Ariz.; and a sister, Flora Jean Gilfillan, Longford.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Shobe; a son, Eugene Hughes; a brother, Dick Bennett; and a sister, Viola Marie Bennett.

Funeral will be 1 p.m. on Saturday, April 3 at the First Presbyterian Church in Chanute. Burial will follow at 4 p.m. at the Elk City Cemetery in Elk City.

The family will receive friends this evening from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Penwell-Gabel Johnson Chapel.

Memorials in her name may be made to the Ladies Auxiliary of the American Legion and may be left with the funeral home.

I am sorry for the loss of your mother. I will keep each of you in my thoughts and prayers during this difficult time. I know you all will miss her dearly, but we rely on our beliefs and our faith that she has gone on to rest in a much better place, and we celebrate she has joined other loved ones gone before.
