Gary Wayne Berthot, 73, Chanute died Thursday, May 13, 2010 at Neosho Memorial Regional Medical Center, Chanute.

Berthot was born April 22, 1937 in Chanute to Inez L. Lock and Wayne Francis Berthot. He was a wood pattern maker in Wichita for 14 years and retired from Young’s Welding, Chanute, after 30 years.

He was a graduate of Chanute High School and attended Junior College in Chanute and Kansas State University in Manhattan. He enjoyed his family of four children, 10 grandchildren and one great-grandson. He was an avid fisherman, hunter, and especially proud of his vegetable garden and farm.

He was a member of St. Patrick’s Catholic Church and the Knights of Columbus, where he served as state officer for fourth degree. He was District Deputy President of the Chanute Seniors Citizen Club and volunteered for many church and community charities and groups.

He is survived by his wife of 52 years, Carolyn; sons Steven Berthot, Chanute, Kevin Berthot, Chanute, and Adam Berthot of Ohio; daughter Mechele Guthrie, Chanute; 10 grandchilden, Jessica Berthot Gordon, Karita Berthot Pinela, Alicia Berthot, Davey Backes, Layce Backes, Andrew Berthot, Daniel Berthot, Cayley Berthot, Bradley Berthot and Libby Berthot; one great-grandson, Marshall Gordon; his mother, Inez, Chanute; sister Maribell Shevlin, Topeka and brother Don Berthot, Olanville, Texsas. He is preceded in death by his infant son, John Randall Berthot, sister Carol Haas and father Wayne Berthot. He will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved him.

Memorial Service will be held at a later date. A Rosary was held on Sunday, May 16 at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church, Chanute. by the Knights of Columbus. Memorial contributions in his name may be made to St. Patrick’s School or to the Cherry Street Youth Center.
