Edith “Lurene” (Rice) Mix, 93, Chanute, died Friday, May 23, 2008, at Neosho Memorial Regional Medical Center.

She was born on Dec. 19, 1914, in Walnut to Claude J. and Muriel Shirley Hurst.

She married Earl “Spud” Rice on March 4, 1939. He preceded her in death on April 26, 1984. She married Virgil Mix on June 26, 1991. He preceded her in death in September 1992.

She was a member of the First Christian Church of Chanute and the Chanute Senior Citizen Center.

She worked at USD 413 for several years as a cook.

Survivors include two daughters, Vicki Bitts, Chanute, and Linda Rice of Joplin, Mo.; a granddaughter, Cindy Crowl; a grandson, Kendall Bitts; a great-grandson, Zachary Crowl; a great-granddaughter, Janae Crowl; and two nephews and 10 nieces.

She was preceded in death by three brothers, Howard, Glen and Roy Hurst; and three sisters, Mildred Farmer, Lucille Bolze and her twin Corinne Moody.

Funeral will be 1:30 p.m. Wednesday at the First Christian Church. Burial will follow at East Hill Cemetery in Erie under the direction of Penwell-Gabel Gibson Chapel.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home.

Contributions may be made to the First Christian Church in care of the funeral home.
