Hazel Lorene Van Houten, 75, Duncan, Okla., formerly of Humboldt, died unexpectedly on Tuesday, May 25, 2010, in Duncan.

She was born April 26, 1935 in Humboldt, the daughter of Harold Clifford and Lorene Sarah Brocker Piatt.

She graduated from Humboldt High School. Hazel was united in marriage to William R. VanHouten on Dec. 11, 1955 in Humboldt.

Hazel was a homemaker, collected “Wizard of Oz” memorabilia, loved Dalmatian dogs and reading and taking pictures. She was a member of First Freewill Baptist Church.

Survivors include her husband, William; a son, Dale A. VanHouten of Duncan, a daughter, Brenda K. Myer of Chanute, a son, Samuel R. VanHouten and wife, Patty, of Tempe, Ariz., a daughter, Christy L. Barnhart and husband, Rick, of Humboldt; nine grandchildren, Bill Barnhart, Crystal Santos, Aaron Myer, Jessica Hambright, Amy Beck, Stephanie VanHouten, Emily VanHouten and Ernie VanHouten, and Patrick Ellis; and eight grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents a sister and a brother.

Funeral was 10 a.m. Saturday, May 29 at First Freewill Baptist Church, the Rev. Mike King officiating. Burial followed at Duncan Cemetery under the direction of Don Grantham Funeral Home.
