RMS Principal says education is a gateway, meet Chris Shields

Q: What inspired you to enter into a career in education?

A: I originally got into education because I loved sports and wanted to coach. However, over time I developed a passion for educating and helping students grow to become the best version of themselves in all phases of life.

Q: Where are you from?

A: I Grew up in Altamont. Although I never lived in Chanute prior to moving here, much of my extended family are from Chanute.

Q: What is your favorite thing about your job?

A: Serving the students and watching the transformation process that occurs within each of them over their three years here at Royster Middle School.

Q: Are there any challenges you have faced in your role?

A: As an administrator I get to know a wider range of students than I did as a teacher, but I don’t always get to know them as intimately as I did when I was a teacher. Memorizing 400 names is quite the challenge!

Q: How has your career evolved over time?

A: I actually taught public school for two years before deciding to coach college football. After being on the road with recruiting, I decided to get back into public schools so I could spend more time with my family. I’ve taught and coached in Warrenton, Missouri, Winfield, Wentzville, Missouri, and Joplin, Missouri, before coming to Chanute in 2015.

Q: Why is education important?

A: Education is a gateway for our children to be whoever they want when they grow up. It opens doors to new opportunities and experiences and introduces them to people from different backgrounds. It allows them to shape their own pathway to whatever they choose to do after graduation.

Q: What do you enjoy outside of work?

A: Sports. I am an avid Miami Dolphins fan. I also enjoy spending time with my family.

Q: What about your homelife?

A: I am married to Jennifer Shields, I have three daughters and three grandkids.
