Hosting Baldwin on Friday evening, the Chanute Blue Comets lost, 3-nil, in home girls soccer action.

Baldwin and Chanute were knotted, nil-nil, through the first half before Baldwin’s offense opened up in the second stanza.

“In the first half, we played a lot better,” Chanute interim head coach Maggie Robertson said. Robertson is filling in for head coach Kelsey Fox, who is on maternity leave.

“We were playing with aggression and intensity. We really moved the ball up top. We also had the wind at our back and that helped us push forward. We got to the second half and not having that wind really killed us. They won more 50-50 balls and when we got tired, we lost our momentum and intensity.”

When the Blue Comets had the wind at their back in the first half, Chanute stayed competitive with the visitors.

“We kept our aggression and were winning 50-50 balls. That’s the key for us,” Robertson said. “We have to be able to push forward and get those give-andgos on the outside. We got some really good crosses in to give us opportunities.”

Chanute won its first two matches in program history earlier in the season against Paola and Rayton. Since then, the Blue Comets have lost five matches in a row, including an overtime loss to Wichita-West.

“Honestly, with us being a new program and being in our third year, we’re having to gauge it game-by-game,” Robertson said. “We take every game as a new game. We have to know our opponents and come out and do the best we can do.”

Chanute gets a road rematch with Paola on Tuesday.

“It’ll be an awesome game,” Robertson said. “They were the first win we ever had. Our girls will come in on a high. But they’ll have to stay locked in. They’ll have to connect on passes, keep the ball on the ground and finish our crosses. We only beat them 1-nil last time and that’s not a huge win.”
