Alex “Hondo” Mendoza, age 80, of Independence, passed away peacefully in his sleep on April 26, 2025, after a courageous 12-year battle with cancer.
Born Dec. 27, 1944, in Independence, to Arcadio and Phylis Mendoza, Alex lived a life of quiet strength, generosity, and service. He dedicated 30 years of his life to the U.S. Postal Service in Chanute, becoming a familiar and friendly face to many in the community. After retirement, Alex stayed active, delivering for ANW Co-op and working part-time at the local liquor store — always quick with a wave, a helping hand, or a kind word.
Known for his big heart and humble nature, Alex touched countless lives through small acts of kindness and an unwavering commitment to those around him. Whether you were a neighbor, a customer, or a stranger in need, Hondo never hesitated to lend support or share a smile.
Alex was preceded in death by his parents, Arcadio and Phylis Mendoza, and his brother Tony Mendoza.
He is survived by his loving daughter Nikki (Mendoza) Vestal and her husband, Marty Vestal, of Olathe; and his cherished grandchildren Jakob, Layla, and Wrigley Vestal, who brought endless pride and joy to his later years. He is also survived by siblings Joe (Kathy) Mendoza, Nacho Mendoza, Mary (Mike) Lewman, and Esther DeVore, along with numerous nieces, nephews, and friends who will miss his steady presence and warm spirit.
“Well done, good and faithful servant.”
