Blue Comets place third, qualify three to state tennis at regionals in Parsons

PARSONS — Chanute will send three players to the KSHSAA 4A Boys Tennis Championships in Winfield after claiming third place as a team at the regional tournament in Parsons on Friday.

Parsons registered 21 points to stake its claim to first place as a team.

Independence was runner- up with 17 points, followed by Chanute (8), Fort Scott and Iola (6). Labette County and Coffeyville did not earn points.

Doubles duo Ethan Burnett and Ayden Cummings, as well as singles competitor Arthur Schmitt, will represent Chanute at state.

Burnett and Cummings finished fourth at the Parsons regional. The two beat Labette County, 6-0, 6-0, and Independence, 6-0, 6-0, in the first two rounds before medically defaulting the final two matches against Parsons and Independence.

Schmitt grabbed the last spot in singles, placing sixth. Schmitt took down Trapper Boren of Iola, 6-0, 6-2, in the first round before losing to eventual runner-up Keith Sanders of Independence, 6-1, 6-2.

Schmitt earned his bid to state with a medical default win over Tanner Nolting of Parsons. Schmitt then lost to Alan Mah, 6-0, 6-2, in the fifth place match.

Chanute will head to the KSHSAA 4A State Championships in Winfield, which start on Friday.
