Blue Comets beat Coffeyville, split with Ottawa

Winners of three of their last four games, the Chanute Blue Comets took down Coffeyville in SEK League baseball action on Monday, 7-1.

Chanute then split a road series on Wednesday at Ottawa, losing Game 1, 3-0, before taking the win in Game 2, 10-5.

In Monday’s win over Coffeyville, Kris Harding carried the load with two hits and three RBIs, including a double, at the plate. On the hill, Harding delivered a six-frame, one-hit outing while striking out eight.

Brady Alonzo also notched a pair of hits in the league victory.

In the first game of Tuesday’s doubleheader, Ottawa scored a run apiece in the second, third and fourth innings.

Chanute was limited to four hits while Jacob Thompson ate the loss on the hill. Thompson allowed nine hits and a walk with three runs, all earned.

Will Altic earned the win on the mound, going the complete game with four strikeouts for Ottawa.

The Blue Comets’ offense came alive in Game 2 with 10 runs over eight hits. Chanute also drew five walks.

Alonzo proved to be the hero, homering twice in the game while tallying three RBIs.

Lawrence Cheney earned the winning decision, falling one out short of a complete game while striking out four.

Ottawa’s Ashton McCurdy had a two-hit game.

Sitting at 9-15 overall on the season, Chanute is currently the No. 13 seed in the Class 4A East regional standings.

Chanute wrapped its regular season with a road trip to Fort Scott on Thursday.
